Steve Romeo: Live to Ski

What comfort is there for the rest of us when someone this smart, this experienced, this funny and vibrant, is taken by an avalanche? The bodies of ski mountaineer Steve Romeo and friend Chris Onufer were recovered today on Ranger Peak in Grand Teton National Park. Steve's site was a huge source of information and inspiration for backcountry skiers across the planet, myself included. Truly, this is devastating news.

Sad news indeed. Steve will be missed by many. I checked his website most days, and found his adventures to be inspirational.

Nice words Andy...such a huge loss.

Every avalanche fatality is sobering...but this one especially. He was not only experienced and careful, but he was such a great member of the online backcountry community and a wonderful advocate for the sport. It just hits so hard.

I've said it already, but maybe we're lucky here in SoCal with not enough snow to ski in such a strange snowpack year; the early season instabilities look to be sticking around and will be here all year.
