Do-it-Yourself Diamond Teeth

How to Put a Diamond in Your Teeth

One of the fun parts of running a website is tracking browser stats. This information is useful in site design (matching your content to your users’ interests). It’s also just plain…interesting.

So I was looking over a list of keywords that brought people to SierraDescents this week when I came across this search phrase: “putting in a diamond on your teeth yourself”.

Now, this may sound crazy, but I think I understand why Google referred this searcher to my site.

You see, Google’s algorithm is tremendously associative. If you’re looking for mountains, Google knows that mountains often go with hills, peaks, and ridges, as well as climbing, hiking, and skiing.

In crawling and ranking pages, Google especially looks for ‘webs’ or arrays of related words, rather than just one word repeated over and over.

Things start to go awry in Google’s algorithm, however, when you rank especially highly for a specific word. Google is at heart a popularity-based system. SierraDescents tends to rank extremely well for the search phrase “Black Diamond” because of our unmatched review coverage of BDEL gear.

But this means that we also get occasional traffic from things unrelated to Black Diamond Equipment, Ltd., but within the associative array that Google assigns to the words “black” and “diamond”.

And so we got a visit from someone interested in do-it-yourself dental decoration.

Ordinarily I like to encourage the DIY ethic, but in this case, visions of Krazy Glue, Power Drills, and general mayhem are dancing in my head, so to all future visitors looking to add diamonds or any other gemstone to your grillz, allow me to offer a little advice: Leave it to the Professionals!

That is all.
