Backcountry Skiing Returns…

Dan Mingori & Nate Greenberg have just released the 2nd edition of their backcountry skiing guidebook, 'Backcountry Skiing California's Eastern Sierra,' and it is a substantial update. You can read my review of their original 2008 edition here; the 2014 release happily keeps all the original material (with minor tweaks), and adds coverage of a much larger swatch of the Sierra.

As is the case with the 1st edition, 'Backcountry Skiing' is at its best covering Mammoth and Tioga Pass. Things get more uneven as you drive north or south from the authors' home base, but you'll still enjoy solid new sections on Big Pine (including North Pal, Middle Pal, and Split), Independence, Lone Pine, and Bridgeport. All in all I see about a hundred new pages of material in the 2nd edition, making it easily a must-have addition to your library.

In addition to the many routes, approaches, and secrets that the book reveals, surely one of the pleasures of 'Backcountry Skiing' is its wonderful color photography. Browsing through these many vibrant pages feels much like touring the range itself. You'll be amazed by the Sierra's incredible diversity and beauty—and you'll be planning your next visit ASAP. Get the book from Wolverine Publishing and then get after it. Highly Recommended.
