Pieps Freeride Beacon

Pieps Freeride Avalanche Transceiver

The Freeride

Do you check to see what kind of avalanche beacon your partner is carrying? I ask because there are a wide range of beacons on the market, and some of them are a lot easier to use than others.

Case in point: the new Pieps Freeride. The Freeride is a tiny-tiny device about the size of a pre-3G cell phone. I admit I got a bit of a thrill holding one for the first time. The design is compact, light, and cool.

But your beacon isn’t just a new toy—it’s a (potentially) life-and-death safety device. I did my standard scan-the-manual-once-and-then-go test with the Freeride, and the result was definitely a little jarring. Presumably because it is a single-antenna transceiver, the Freeride doesn’t actively direct you toward a buried victim. Rather, it combines a distance meter with an arrow-shaped signal strength meter that indicates when the beacon is aligned with flux lines.

In practice, this makes the Freeride much less intuitive than a top searcher like the Backcountry Access Tracker DTS. Don’t get me wrong—I think the Freeride has its uses, but serving as a primary beacon in high-risk contexts probably isn’t one of them. I do like the Freeride as a fine choice for inbounds use (you don’t absolutely need a fast search function here). And with practice & conceptual understanding of how it works, your search times with the Freeride will improve. Maybe they should rename it the Pieps ‘Frontcountry’?

There are beacons today that are complicated to operate, and this can be a concern if the user isn’t very familiar with them. The Pieps has an interesting variation on this problem: it looks extremely simple to operate, but in its own way, it’s complicated, too. At half the price and weight of just about every other beacon on the market, the Pieps is sure to end up in a lot of hands this winter. Let’s hope they are well-practiced hands.
