If you search around on TGR, there was a fairly lengthy thread on that shovel test.  Their methodology is fairly suspect.

Sno-Seal and an oven on the warm setting should improve the anti-absorption properties of the leather in your gloves. That&#039;s what I do with all of my leather gloves... BD Patrol, Marmot Work Gloves, Hestras, etc.</description>

But it&#039;s no doubt in the lightweight class, and any lightweight shovel is eventually going to get bent out of shape.  Problem is, the market for the backcountry touring junkie is in the lightweight tools.  And with that comes practical compromise.</description>
