Backcountry Skiing & Camping

Hefting a fully-loaded winter pack can be a discouraging enough experience to make one look for another sport. Winter adds pounds to everything, necessitating heavier, bulkier gear, more backups, and absolute reliability.

Luckily, gear has lost some weight, thanks to the recent ultralight equipment trend (which will only continue to offer better, lighter gear, albeit at premium prices). Also, the prime backcountry season usually begins in spring, which means you can often get away with using 3-season gear.
