Black Diamond Half Dome Helmet

Black Diamond Half Dome Helmet
  1. outstanding protection
  2. 'weatherproof'
  3. economical
  4. 12.2 ounces

Though it lacks the flair of the latest designs, Black Diamond's Half Dome helmet is the venerable old classic of the climbing world.

Don't mistake the Half Dome's somewhat stodgy appearance for a lack of features or versatility, however. In nearly all conditions and contexts you can imagine, the Half Dome is a strong contender, be it a big mountain winter expedition in the Karakoram or just a little trad climbing at your favorite local crag.

The Half Dome now features a quick-adjust suspension system, EPS liner, and padded brow strap.

I didn't find the Half Dome the most comfortable helmet of those I tested, but it is certainly comfortable enough, and highly adjustable to get the fit right.

You of course get headlamp clips so you can climb with your light on—recessed to stay out of the way when you don't need them.

With a weight of 12 ounces, the Half Dome is now lighter than its earlier generations, yet still strong enough to provide big-wall protection. Compared to today's crop of ultralight climbing helmets (many of which must be retired after a single blow), the Half Dome offers inarguably more durability and safety.

Ventilation remains mixed. This is probably not the helmet to wear if temperatures are going to be extremely hot. On the other hand, the Half Dome's modest vents make this a great choice for winter, or cold or stormy weather. You'll appreciate the Half Dome's solid top in pouring rain, or blizzards, or dust storms.

Skiers will prefer the Half Dome's smaller vents for warmth against icy winter winds. Backcountry skiers should also note that the Half Dome's smaller vents are less dangerous when skiing through trees, as you're much less likely to spear a branch and get yanked to a stop by your head.

For price and versatility, the Half Dome is a fine choice as an all-around climbing helmet—and a top pick for harsh conditions and expedition use.
