S.O.S. Mini 2.2m Avalanche Probe
- 5.8 ounce aluminum probe
- steel cable locks segments
- 2.2 meters extended
The Survial on Snow Mini Probe features is among the lightest aluminum avalanche probes on the market.
A crisis situation is the worst possible time to discover your gear isn't up to snuff. The SOS is practically idiot-proof. Its seven Easton 7075 aluminum segments are joined by a plastic-coated cable that is threaded through them—essentially the same setup as a tent pole, with a far-stronger steel cable replacing the usual bungee cord.
You fit the segments together, taking up slack with the cable, until finally locking the probe together with a simple clip pin. It's simple, and it works.
The SOS has an "oversized" tip for better snow layer feel. The probe is .35" in diameter, extends to 7 and a half feet, and collapses down to 13 inches. There remains some debate about the utility of these shorter-length avalanche probes.
Note, however, that probes are among the first avy essentials to get left behind in the car. The SOS Mini's light weight makes it more likely you'll actually have it with you when you need it, and that's always going to be better than no probe at all.
