Split Mountain

Huge, huge day on Split yesterday—we skied the north face right off the top of the north summit, then down into the Red Lake basin right beneath the east face and the central couloir.

Yes, the video is long, but so was the adventure. The diversity, beauty, and abundance of skiable terrain in the Split vicinity really defies description. I think if road/trail access weren't so awful, I'd just forgo the rest of the range and spend all my time exploring here.

Nice job Andy. BTW, do you see it? 1:08 - 1:17 into the video. It's right there. You know what I'm talking about.

Congrats on another sweet trip. I need to stop watching these before I lose my mind... the only snow left here in New England is a few hundred feet in Tuckerman Ravine.

Nice job. Too many turns for my taste on the descent, but well done! Any chance of you doing Split Couloir?

Andy June 1, 2011 at 4:42 pm

Florian,

I thought conditions on that day were perfect for the EC, but it was very windy, with a lot of blowing snow, raising fears of another hair-trigger slab.

In my opinion, it's getting late for extreme lines: the sun is very intense now, and the favorable window can close very quickly on any aspect that isn't true north...

Brilliant once again Andy. I enjoy these immensely.

Very cool, Drew. So... 5:30am start... Summit @ 3pm... what time did you end up getting back to the car?

Andy June 2, 2011 at 7:44 am

It was a 13-hour day. :)
