Telluride Blues

As is my annual custom, last week I traded Southern California for Colorado’s San Juans, spending six days in the town of Telluride (more...)...

Revelation Bowl

Well I’m still thinking about skiing… Here’s something from 2012: Revelation Bowl, in Telluride, Colorado. What’s interesting is it looks like the video was shot in black and white, and selectively colorized. But this is just a trick of the light and landscape. I also love the way the frame is dominated by the terrain’s (more...)...

A Telluride Storm

Telluride, Colorado. It wasn’t supposed to snow Wednesday night, but it did—nine inches of perfectly light snow on top of nearly three feet of fresh snow that fell earlier this week. And then, in that incomparably magic way, the clouds parted at nine a.m., just as the lifts opened. Snow crystals sparkled in sunlight, floating (more...)...

Chasing My Brother

Really there’s no better motivator than having a little brother who’s faster than you in the gates. I spent damn near my entire young adulthood chasing him, and, well…it looks like I’m still trying to catch him. 🙂 Hard to say who’d be faster if we jumped into a course today (NARRATOR: your brother would (more...)...

Palmyra Peak

You really can’t understand how extraordinary Telluride’s hike-to 13,320′ Palmyra Peak is unless you actually go up the bastard. This is wild country, fully deserving of its EX rating, offering the kind of remote and intimidating skiing you just don’t get within the bounds of (realistically) any other major North American resort. My brother was (more...)...

Telluride: Top To Bottom

I’d been thinking about getting this shot ever since I first bought my Contour helmet cam: a continous clip skiing Telluride from the top of the Revelation chairlift, elevation 12,570′, all the way down to the Gondola station in the Town of Telluride, elevation 8,750′. Getting the shot proved trickier than expected, thanks to the (more...)...

Chair 9, Dust, Winter Storm Watch

What a funny trip this has been. I really agonized over whether or not to go, and finally decided at the last minute, thinking I’d enjoy some late-spring skiing. And then this happens…day after day of fresh snow. More snow overnight. Chair 9 was brilliant this morning: fresh tracks and even a peek of sunshine (more...)...

Gold Hill No. 9

9:44 am atop Telluride, elevation 12,570′. A cold wind blasts across the ridge as my brother and I hop off the Revelation Lift and check the signs near the patrol hut. The verdict: the Gold Hill Chutes are open. It’s our last day here this year, and this will be a fine way to cap (more...)...

Skiing Palmyra Peak

I am standing on Palmyra Peak’s summit ridge with two Telluride ski patrollers, and they seem every bit as amazed as I am to be here. From our perch at 13,150 feet, we can see deep into the vast high-altitude cirques and spines of the Telluride backcountry—Lena Basin, San Joaquin Ridge, Bear Creek Canyon. But (more...)...

Telluride Dining Guide

Okay, you’ve made it to Telluride in more or less one piece, you’ve settled into your condo, and if you’re lucky, your luggage will arrive sometime tomorrow. Wondering where the heck to get something to eat? Never fear: here’s our first-ever, somewhat irreverent, certainly non-comprehensive, and hopefully not too libelous guide to fine dinning in (more...)...
